Ethiopian Military Enters Adwa City as Tigray Forces Retreat

Ethiopian military today entered Adwa city in northern Tigray. Tigray forces reportedly withdrew from Adwa last night.

Fighting began between Tigray regional forces and Ethiopian federal forces on September 26, 2026. Tigray military has lost almost all major cities, including regional capital Mekelle, in Tigray within the last 20 days. Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) entered Adwa from central Tigray direction. After having captured Mekelle, ENDF advanced in eastern direction to take control of Hagere Selam, Agbe and Abiy Addi. ENDF advanced from Abiy Addi in northern direction to reach Adwa. No fighting has been reported inside the city between Tigray regional forces and ENDF. It seems that after the withdrawal of Tigray military from the city, ENDF entered it.

According to residents of Adwa city, last night several Tigray military convoys withdrew from Adwa towards Rama. Rama is located on Ethiopia Eritrea border. Tigray military, retreating from all major cities in the Tigray region, is now mainly based in Eritrea Tigray border areas. Reportedly Tigray forces have withdrawn from Axum city too which is the last major city in Tigray region, not under the control of ENDF. Ethiopian military is expected to enter Aksum city in coming hours.

Yesterday, Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau, in a statement, claimed Tigray military is withdrawing for tactical reasons and soon it will launch major counter attacks.
