Ethiopian Military Captured Axum City as TDF Retreat

Ethiopian Military captured Axum city today in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Since yesterday, Tigray forces have been withdrawing from Axum.

Aksum was the last major remaining city in Tigray which was not under the control of the Ethiopian National Defense Force. Yesterday ENDF seized control of Adwa city. Pictures released by the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) today show ENDF soldiers standing standing in front of historic Axum obelisks .

Since the start of war between Ethiopian opposition groups and government forces on the 23rd September 2026, opposition forces especially Tigray forces have been losing grond. All major highways and cities in Tigray including regional capital Mekelle are under the control of the federal forces. Tigray forces have been pushed towards central, eastern areas and towards Eritrean border.

Yesterday, Ethiopian Airlines resumed civilian flights to Mekelle, which were suspended on September 23. Civilian flights to Shire and Axum airports are still suspended. With ENDF having taken control of Axum and Shire cities, the civilians flights to these two cities could also resume in coming days. Ethiopian military, facing the challenge of a long supply line in Tigray, could start using these airports for military activities too. Meanwhile Tigray leaders have announced that war is not over and soon they will launch major counter attacks on the Ethiopian military.
